The Town is considering a project to construct left turn lanes on Northbound at the intersections of Main Street and Northbound/Southbound US-17 (Jacob Smart Blvd), as well as the introduction of a left turn lane on Southbound US-17 and US-278 (Grays Hwy/Third Avenue). This project may necessitate the loss of on-street parking on US-17 and Main Street, which creates some concerns for businesses that have storefronts at Main and US-17. On the other hand, the daily traffic counts now exceed 9,000 vehicles trips per day at these intersections (five years ago they were less than 5,000 per day)---and backups/delays for left turns are increasingly becoming an issue during peak rush hours at both traffic lights. And with growth coming to our area, traffic counts will only increase over time.
